At 3 months the adrenal cortex is hyporesponsive to novelty stress and at 12 months the MR mRNA expression is increased in deprived and handled animals. Adult animals which have been maternally deprived are impaired in the acquisition of the spatial task. At present we can state that the frequency and duration of maternal separation during infancy differentially affects the stress-responsiveness and learning for at least one year. Supported by the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research NWO grant 554-545.

Believers in extrasensory perceptions more strongly avoided consecutive guessing of semantically related response alternatives than did nonbelievers. In Exp. 2, students were asked to spontaneously generate as many words as possible that would belong to either one of two semantically distinct categories (animals, and fruit). Believers in paranormal forms of causation, overall generating as many words as nonbelievers, were found to shift more frequently between the categories. These results show an association between belief in the paranormal and (I) a relative overrepresentation of semantic similarity, and (2) a relative preference for remote (beyond-ca- tegory) over close (within-category) associations.

In the animal study, we used male and female spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), an animal model of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and male and female WKY comparison rats, 8 rats in each group.
